    Description

Antique Apothecary Trade Sign, Johnsons Anodyne Liniment, The Athlete, Portrait. Rare original Trade sign, circa 1905-10 for Johnson’s Anodyne Ointment, à cure for bruises, strains and soreness. Features a painting by British artist G.A. Brackenbury. Brackenbury was a militant suffragette and was jailed for many acts of civil disobedience. She was a famous portrait painter and the Athlete was a risque work of hers depicting a handsome virulent male athlete. This piece is in its original Edwardian oak frame, right out of the pharmacy it once came from. Purchased at a London antique shop in the 1960’s. I’m assuming it’s a print of Brackenbury’s painting. There is a tear in upper left corner that was there at time of framing. It has a cross collectible element in that it appeals to Pharmacy and apothecary collectors, sign and advertising collectors, Suffragette collectors and has an appeal for gay male and or athletic subject collectors. 17” by 15” framed.
