    Description

MYSTERIOUS TRENCH ART SHELL VASE ARTS AND CRAFTS, GREAT PATINA
This WW1 trench art shell is a mystery, I shared the shell on the "
World War 1 AEF Collectors" Facebook site and it was the subject of some conjecture.  The shell itself is French made and either an artillery or mortar shell, on one side of the shell is an American crest topped by an eagle, on the left side of the crest is a French flag, on the right side of the crest is a either an Australian or a British flag.   Since the American crest is front and center we can assume that this piece is American, or made for an American.  On the other side of the shell is where the real mystery is, it shows what looks like an upward pointing arrow in a circle.  I have not been able to identify this insignia but others have suggested that "it resembles the US Gunner rank insignia, except for the chevron above.  They suppose it could some minor Artillery unit insignia.  Perhaps the chevron is meant to be the discharge chevron?  Maybe an upside down service chevron?  Or wound chevron?"   So, much of this trench art vase remains a mystery.
Shell measures 10 1/2" high, 3 1/2" diameter at the base, it has great patina and character.
