Description
A 12 piece collection of World War I items from US two soldiers who were probably friends from Kewanee, Illinois.All these items were sent to and kept safe and secure for 100 years by a Miss Alina Thiel, Kewanee, Illinois RR5, and her subsequent family.
The soldier's names are Walter W. Charlet and William L. Thiel.
Was Miss Alina Thiel the girlfriend of Walter Charlet?
Here are the items:
1. Registration Certificate of Wm. F. Thiel, dated June 5, 1917, by registrar, WIlliam P. Bauer.
2. Picture post card of one of the soldiers.
3. A Red Cross post card from Walter letting Alina know that "The ship on which I sailed has arrived safely overseas."
4. A small sheet of paper with 3 military addresses of Private Walter W. Charlet at 37th Medical Replacement Unit, Camp Grant, in Rockford, Illinois, and one address of Mr. WIlliam F. Thiel of Battery E, 331st F.A. Camp Robinson, Sparta, WIsconsin.
5. 82 page booklet, Songs The Soldiers and Sailors SIng, Published and Copyrighted by Leo Feist, Inc, Feist Building, 231-5 West 40th Stree, New York, USA, 1917. On back is recommends everyone invest in "U. S. Government War Savings Stamps." "Every stamp shoots a Gun. Every Gun ends a Hun."
6. An absolutely beautiful handkerchief case made of possibly rayonand cotten, with embroidered edges of black, gold and silver thread and embroidered US Eagle design. Inside is a US flag with 48 stars and pictures of a soldier and mother or girlfriend or wife with Forget Me Not and poem: "When the golden sun is sinking, And your mind from troubles free, While of others you are thinking, Will you sometimes think of me."
7. Three beautiful, Souvenir of France, silk hankies, 13"x13".
8. A brass U.S.A. insignia that came off the front of the hankerchief case.
9. The American Creed print with frame, 8 1/4"x11", from C.S. Voorhees Co. Rendering a Community Service Furnitute and appliances, Fairview, ILL.
10. An 8"x46", rolled up picture of the 41st Co. 161st Depot Brigade Camp Grant, ILL, July 20th, 1918, Lt. Benj. S. De Boice Com'dg. On back of picture is stamped "For Duplicate orders from this photograph write Smelsac & Tonlinson Cirkut Co Rockford, Illinois."
11. The cardbaord box that held the handkerchief case and was mailed to Miss Alina Thiel by Walter Charlet at Camp Grant.
Condition
- Overall good condirion for 100+ years old. The cardboard box is in rough condition, the rolled up picture has some folds, the handkerchief case has a few rips in the flag and maybe the cover has faded slightly. But all have been carefully kept safe and secure and have obviously been treasured by the families.
A truly wonderful collection of World War I items.
